DALLAS — With a press release on November 6, 2024, the Latvian flag carrier airBaltic (BT) announced an extension of the codeshare agreement with the leading German carrier Lufthansa (LH).
Beginning November 20, 2024, six LH flights will use the airBaltic code BT. The flights operated by Lufthansa (LH) link Munich (MUC) to six German cities:
- Cologne Bonn (CGN)
- Bremen (BRE)
- Hamburg (HAM)
- Hannover (HAJ)
- Stuttgart (STR)
On the other hand, LH will use the airBaltic (BT) code on some of its flights linking the three major cities of Latvia —Riga (RIX), Tallinn (TLL), and Vilnius (VNO)— with Munich (MUC).
It is not new that BT and the German flag carrier practice codesharing; the first agreement between the two airlines was signed in 2020.
The Hybrid Airline of Europe
airBaltic was founded in August 1995 and started operations in October of the same year; in the Europan travel market, it stands out for being a hybrid airline that unifies the operational model of LCC (Low-Cost Carrier) and a traditional network of a flag carrier.
Over the years, its network has significantly expanded, and now BT can count 130 destinations linking Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Balkan area. The fleet, with an average year of 4.1, is entirely composed of Airbus A220. BT's headquarters are located in Riga International Airport (RIX).
