Alaska Airlines Launches Daily Seattle–Tokyo Narita Service

SEATTLE — Alaska Airlines (AS) marked a significant milestone today by launching daily nonstop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT), operated by Hawaiian Airlines (HA).

This inaugural wide-body route signals the beginning of AS’s ambitious expansion into international long-haul markets. By 2030, the Seattle-based carrier aims to serve at least 12 global destinations from Seattle.

The launch was toasted with a new signature cocktail, the "Narita Banana," at the Alaska Lounge in Seattle, celebrating a partnership between Seattle's Westland Whiskey and Tokyo's Tokyo Confidential bar.

The new Tokyo service, operated with HA's Airbus A330 aircraft, offers three classes, complimentary meals, amenity kits, and free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi. Starting September 12, Seoul Incheon (ICN) will be the next international route.

Comments fro Alaska Airlines, SEA Officials

Alaska's CEO Ben Minicucci emphasized Seattle's strategic importance as the closest U.S. gateway to Tokyo and a growing hub for transpacific travel.

"This is a monumental step for our hometown carrier," said Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins, noting the strong demand for regional international connections.

While HA crews operate the initial flights, AS is preparing its long-haul service experience using its growing Dreamliner fleet. Plans also include a refresh of HA’s A330s to enhance the long-haul expertise across the network.

According to AS, the future of its international service from Seattle “will be with our growing fleet of Boeing 787-9 aircraft as we lean into the strong presence of the Alaska brand in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.”
