Belfast International Airport Opens New Terminal Extension

BELFAST — Belfast International Airport (BFS) has officially opened a new terminal extension, a milestone in its £100 million investment program. The extension is part of a broader effort to modernize the airport and improve the overall passenger experience.

New Security Hall to Speed Things Up

According to World of Construction, one of the key upgrades in this new section is a spacious area, equipped with next-generation scanners. These allow travellers to keep liquids and laptops inside their bags, reducing wait times and making the process less stressful.

It’s the kind of upgrade passengers have been hoping for, especially during peak travel months when long security queues can quickly become stressful.

Duty-free Gets an Overhaul

The terminal extension also includes a large walk-through duty-free store, developed in partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail. Covering about 1,160 square metres, the shop offers a mix of global brands and local products and serves as a key commercial anchor in the revamped terminal space.

There’s a clear focus on giving passengers more to do (and buy) after they get through security.

Part of a Bigger Vision for the Airport

The new terminal area is just Phase One of a five-year development project delivered by VINCI Airports, which owns and operates Belfast International. The company’s been in charge since 2018, and this is one of the most significant transformations they’ve undertaken at the airport so far.

Over the next few years, passengers can expect more retail outlets, refreshed food and beverage spaces, and better check-in and arrivals infrastructure.

Boosting Northern Ireland’s Connectivity

Graham Keddie, the airport’s managing director, said the expansion aims to improve facilities and boost economic activity and international connectivity for Northern Ireland

The director added that with passenger numbers rising steadily—Belfast International had its busiest year ever in 2024—the time was right to invest heavily in long-term growth.

What’s Next?

More improvements are already in the pipeline. The airport already handles millions of passengers a year, and this upgrade is expected to help accommodate even more in the years ahead.

According to VINCI Airports, the coming phases will focus on both customer experience and sustainability, with more innovative layouts, energy-efficient systems, and expanded services all on the table.

Buckle up and stay tuned for more updates!
