PARIS — In a move signaling Saudi Arabia’s growing ambitions in global aviation, Riyadh Air (RX), the kingdom’s newest national carrier, has finalized an order for up to 50 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, with 25 firm orders and 25 options. The deal was announced today during the first day of the 2025 Paris Air Show in Le Bourget.
Launched in March 2023, Riyadh Air is a wholly owned venture of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) with a clear mandate: to diversify the kingdom’s economy toward a diversified post-oil future under its Vision 2030 agenda. The airline aims to make the Saudi capital a premier global transit point, rivaling the likes of Dubai, Doha, and Istanbul.
From the outset, RX’s vision has been expansive. Unlike legacy carriers that evolved over decades, Riyadh Air is being built from the ground up, with a mission to connect over 100 destinations by 2030.
With regional powerhouses such as Emirates (EK), Qatar Airways (QR,) and Turkish Airlines (TK) dominating the East-West transit traffic, the emergence of Riyadh Air—supported by massive state investment and geopolitical backing—could reshape these dynamics.
This move also reflects a shift in the regional aviation order. For decades, Saudi Arabia lagged behind its Gulf neighbors in aviation innovation. With RX and the parallel development of King Salman International Airport—envisioned as one of the world’s largest airports—Saudi Arabia is signaling it will no longer play catch-up.

A Stronger Airbus Relationship
The order also deepens Riyadh’s ties with Europe and Airbus. While RX’s previous Boeing 787 Dreamliner order (39 firm, 33 options) strengthened US ties, the Airbus deal announced today marks a diversified procurement strategy that leverages both American and European aerospace partnerships.
The Airbus A350-1000 offers the range, efficiency, and capacity needed for ultra-long-haul routes, allowing Riyadh Air to enter major international markets from the outset. The move also balances the airline’s earlier Boeing order, signaling a pragmatic approach to fleet development, supplier relationships, and geopolitical alignment.
Whether RX can execute on this potential will depend on more than aircraft—it will require operational discipline, market responsiveness, and sustained investment. However, the Airbus A350 order announced today in Paris sends a clear message: Saudi Arabia intends to play a larger role in global aviation, and it’s taking concrete steps to achieve this goal.
