DENVER — Frontier Airlines (F9) has reaffirmed its confidence in the Pratt & Whitney GTF (Geared Turbofan) family, placing a follow-on order for 91 GTF-powered Airbus A320neo single-aisles.
These jets, slated for deliveries beginning in the fourth quarter of 2026, will not only reinforce F9’s status as the U.S carrier with the most extensive and youngest A320 neo fleet, but also bring its total commitment to 235 GTF-equipped aircraft.
A Green Vision Takes Flight
Barry Biffle, CEO of Frontier Airlines, described the deal as a strategic linchpin in “The New Frontier,” the airline’s brand transformation that marries low fares with elevated passenger experience and sustainability. The GTF Advantage engine—known for its superior fuel efficiency and increased take-off thrust—is touted as a powerful ally in Frontier's aim to become “America’s Greenest Airline.”
The carrier was named North America’s Environmental Sustainability Airline of the Year in 2024.
Engine-Wise: Beyond the Purchase
More than a simple acquisition, this arrangement includes a long-term EngineWise® Comprehensive service agreement from Pratt & Whitney. That means maintenance, repair, and overhaul services are all part of the package, cementing Frontier’s operational reliability and efficiency well into the future.
Hot Section Plus: A Smart Mid-Life Boost
On the same day, Pratt & Whitney unveiled its new Hot Section Plus (HS+) upgrade for the PW1100G-JM engines, the original heart of the A320neo family. HS+ borrows heavily from the next-gen GTF Advantage design, promising nearly double the time-on-wing, as much as 90–95% of the durability uplift through only about 35 upgraded parts.
Installations are scheduled to begin in 2026, and HS+ units are fully interchangeable with both legacy GTF and the GTF Advantage fleets, providing an innovative and seamless solution during rotations or mid-life checks.
Nick Tomassetti, vice-president of Sales & Marketing at Pratt & Whitney, explains that HS+ brings the “durability improvements of the GTF Advantage hot section to today’s GTF engine.” It’s a smart halfway measure, giving operators a near-future upgrade without wholesale replacements
Context: Overcoming the GTF Hurdle
This comes on the heels of ongoing global challenges with GTF engines, notably a hot-section powder-metal defect that resulted in wide-scale inspections and grounded aircraft. While other carriers delayed or reconsidered their GTF commitments, Frontier appears to have skirted the worst of the disruption.
The fleet has benefited from timing, as jets delivered after the problematic production window helped avoid the recall wave, allowing this new order to move ahead smoothly.
Bottom Line
Frontier’s decision achieves more than just fleet growth; it’s a strategic triple play of modernization, efficiency, and operational resilience. With fuel savings, extended service intervals, and a flexible upgrade path via HS+, the airline now looks better positioned to deliver affordable, reliable, and greener air travel.
