Brussels Airlines Adds Virtual Reality to Pilot Training

BRUSSELS — Brussels Airlines (SN) has introduced a training method that incorporates virtual reality into their pilot training programs. They are calling it the "Virtual Procedure Trainer" (VPT).

The implementation of VR training is the result of more than two years of strategic collaboration between Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) and Airbus. As part of a joint project with Lufthansa Group airlines, the VPT software developed by Airbus – one module of the Airbus Digital Flight Training Solutions – has been advanced for operational use and embedded into an innovative training concept.

To enhance the realism and efficiency of initial cockpit training, the airline has begun integrating the VPT into Airbus A320 type rating courses, making it the first Lufthansa Group airline to do so.

“With the VPT we are creating a new training ecosystem: more flexible, more efficient, and sustainable. We are very pleased that Brussels Airlines is the first to trust in this innovation – and that we were able to shape a piece of the future of training together.”- Pia Born, Project Manager, Lufthansa Aviation Training

Type Rating Training Redesign

Type rating, the process through which pilots are certified to operate a particular type of aircraft, usually starts with a theoretical induction followed by simulator training sessions.

In the past, this induction step involved familiarization with cockpit configurations and working procedures through manuals and conventional classroom training. But with the introduction of virtual reality technology, the airline has now enabled pilots to experience an entirely realistic cockpit experience through VR headsets.

This switch enables trainee pilots to practice locating switches, familiarizing themselves with cockpit flows, and developing muscle memory for standard operating procedures in a more hands-on and experiential manner.

VR provides a more realistic and experiential training experience, the airline claims, which assists pilots in developing muscle memory and situational awareness before they use full-motion simulators.

Lufthansa Group-Wide Implementation Ahead

This virtual reality solution was unveiled at the start of July and is solely utilized for training on the A320. SN's training staff will increasingly integrate the program to incorporate abnormal procedures and other aircraft, such as the A330 and A350.

The long-term objective is to roll out the system to all ten A320 operators of the Lufthansa Group, marking an essential milestone in the digitalization of flight training, while reducing infrastructure requirements and enhancing the overall efficiency of training programs. LAT is also preparing "an adapted product for the external training market."
