HAMBURG — Air Canada (AC) has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, becoming the first Canadian operator of this type. The aircraft, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, is the first of 30 A321XLRs planned for the fleet. This addition bridges the gap between short-haul narrowbody and long-haul widebody operations.
New aircraft for thinner long-haul markets
The A321XLR provides AC with a smaller-capacity aircraft capable of efficiently operating transatlantic routes that do not require widebody capacity year-round. Airbus reports the jet can fly up to 4,700 nautical miles. AC expects the aircraft to support new international routes and enhance existing markets.
This strategy is reflected in AC’s network plans. The A321XLR will operate Montréal flights to Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Toulouse (TLS), Edinburgh (EDI), and Berlin (BER), as well as Toronto (YYZ) services to Manchester (MAN) and Copenhagen (CPH).
Premium product on a single-aisle jet
The A321XLR marks a significant product upgrade for AC, introducing Signature Class lie-flat seats to a single-aisle aircraft for the first time. The cabin features 14 full-flat Signature Class seats in a 1-1 layout and 168 Economy seats, along with Bluetooth-enabled in-flight entertainment, in-seat power and connectivity, and larger overhead bins.
Fleet renewal, but also route flexibility
Air Canada describes the delivery as part of its broader fleet renewal and growth strategy. Of the 30 A321XLRs, 15 will be leased and 15 purchased directly from Airbus. The aircraft’s performance is expected to help the airline respond to seasonal demand and launch nonstop service to secondary markets. Airbus reported more than 500 orders for the type by the end of March 2026.
Bottom line is that the A321XLR allows AC to serve long, lower-demand routes more efficiently than with larger aircraft such as the Boeing 787 or Airbus A330. Additionally, the airline is using the jet to introduce a premium narrowbody experience on routes between short-haul domestic and traditional widebody long-haul markets.
