NAKHCHIVAN — Azerbaijan reported that drones launched from Iranian territory struck its Nakhchivan exclave on March 5, 2026, including a hit on the passenger terminal at Nakhchivan International Airport (NAJ).
This marks a significant escalation as the Gulf crisis continues to disrupt commercial aviation in several regions, now spilling into Caucasus airspace.
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that one drone struck the airport terminal and another fell near a school in Shakarabad. The attack damaged the airport and injured two civilians.
Reuters reported that two drones crossed into Nakhchivan, with one striking the airport terminal and another landing near a school. Azerbaijani officials reported injuries, while Iran denied involvement.
Why this matters for commercial aviation
This latest incident involving another international airport in the region broadens aviation risks beyond Gulf hubs already affected by airspace closures and flight suspensions.
Nakhchivan is near key regional air corridors, and further cross-border activity could prompt additional route changes, schedule disruptions, and risk-avoidance measures across the South Caucasus and neighboring airspace.
Airlines advise passengers to check flight status regularly and anticipate ongoing changes as regional restrictions evolve.
Airports reporting damage in the current crisis
This marks the fifth airport in the broader region to report damage linked to the escalating Middle East conflict.
- Dubai International (DXB): Dubai Media Office said a concourse sustained minor damage and four staff were injured during the February 28 incident.
- Bahrain International (BAH): Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs reported a drone attack that caused minor material damage at the airport.
- Kuwait International (KWI): Kuwait’s DGCA said a drone targeted Terminal 1, causing minor injuries and limited material damage.
- Zayed International, Abu Dhabi (AUH): Abu Dhabi Airports confirmed one fatality and seven injuries following the interception of a drone targeting the airport.
