Hong Kong Express Inaugurates Penang Route

DALLAS — Cathay Pacific’s (CX) wholly owned LCC subsidiary, Hong Kong Express (UO), took off on its inaugural flight from Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok International Airport (HKG) to Penang International Airport (PEN) in Malaysia on Thursday, November 21, 2024. 

HK Express CEO Jeanette Mao said that due to a recent visa extension between China and Malaysia, the airline “anticipate[s] an influx of mainland Chinese travelers to Penang.” 

The first flight, registered B-KKD, was operated by an Airbus A321neo; future flights will be operated by UO’s Airbus A320neo aircraft. HK Express’ night flights will offer travelers a more affordable option to its parent, Cathay Pacific’s, daily services between the two Asian destinations and allow smooth connections to CX’s 80 other destinations. 

The executive affirmed this by saying the airline’s “role as Hong Kong’s exclusive low-cost carrier comes with a clear mission – providing affordable travel options that make Asia’s dynamic cities accessible to everyone.”

She also said, "Penang, like much of Southeast Asia, offers excellent value for money. Our competitive fares mean travelers can spend more time enjoying local experiences and cuisine, truly embracing our ‘Live More’ philosophy. This approach has consistently resonated with our passengers, who appreciate the balance of affordability and quality service.” 

CEO Jeanette Mao commented on the airline’s recent and future expansion, saying, “This year alone, we’ve introduced four new destinations: Penang, Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport, Clark in the Philippines, and soon, Phu Quoc in Vietnam.”
