ARLINGTON, Virginia — Pratt & Whitney's commercial aftermarket sales rose 21% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, led by higher geared turbofan (GTF) engine volume, according to RTX's October 20 results.
The engine maker's sales increased 10% to US$9.23bn. Commercial original-equipment sales fell 5%, while military sales rose 2%.
Adjusted operating profit grew 29% to US$968m, helped by aftermarket volume and approximately US$160m in recovery under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Reported operating profit fell 19% to US$608m, including a US$363m charge related to a customer bankruptcy. Adjusted figures exclude specified items and are not a substitute for reported results.
Total GTF overhauls increased 35% year over year, including unscheduled visits for powder-metal inspections, *Aviation Week* reported from RTX's earnings call. RTX CEO Chris Calio said GTF engines accounted for the majority of Pratt & Whitney's commercial aftermarket growth.
Scheduled shop visits are also increasing as the fleet matures. According to the report, Chief Financial Officer Neil Mitchill said 80% of the GTF fleet is covered by long-term contracts, with the vast majority using pay-at-shop-visit arrangements. Those terms help explain how rising maintenance activity translates into sales.
For operators, GTF repair capacity remains central to returning aircraft to service, as Airways examined in July. Aftermarket sales growth alone does not measure how quickly engines move through maintenance shops.
Pratt & Whitney's Hot Section Plus upgrade is designed for the PW1100G-JM engine powering the Airbus A320neo family. At its June 2025 announcement, the manufacturer said the package would use about 35 part numbers derived from GTF Advantage technology and be installed during maintenance visits.
The company targets 90% to 95% of the GTF Advantage engine's durability benefits, with the aim of keeping existing engines on wing longer between shop visits. That is a manufacturer performance target; the quarterly results attribute aftermarket growth to higher GTF volume.
