MEXICO CITY — Latin American airlines are reassessing Venezuela as diplomatic channels reopen, although airport reconstruction and an outdated regulatory framework complicate a broader recovery, Reuters reported on October 19.
Peter Cerdá, head of the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), said at a press conference on October 18 that Venezuela's location offers long-term aviation potential. Rebuilding infrastructure is the immediate priority after June's earthquakes damaged the country's main international gateway at Maiquetía (CCS), near Caracas, he said.
ALTA has maintained dialogue with Venezuelan authorities, but emergency recovery work has taken precedence over broader policy discussions, according to Cerdá's remarks reported by Reuters.
LATAM Airlines Group Chief Executive Roberto Alvo said the group would evaluate opportunities as conditions improve. He did not announce additional routes in the remarks reported by the news agency.
American Airlines (AA) has already announced Miami–Barcelona service beginning January 15, 2027. The carrier plans three weekly nonstop flights between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Barcelona, Venezuela (BLA), on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, using Embraer 175 aircraft.
Barcelona will join Caracas and Maracaibo (MAR) in American's Venezuelan network. The airline expects its schedule to reach 24 weekly flights to the country: twice-daily Caracas service, daily Maracaibo flights, and the three Barcelona departures, all from Miami.
American said Barcelona tickets were scheduled to go on sale October 19. It also said passengers would have one-stop access through Miami to more than 100 North American destinations.
The carrier resumed Miami–Caracas flights on April 30. Its latest announcement says Caracas has reopened for international service following the earthquakes, distinguishing the airport's reopening from the broader rebuilding needs described by ALTA.
The planned Barcelona service would extend American's Miami links to eastern Venezuela.
