DRESDEN, GERMANY — Lufthansa Technik has entered the last stage of certifying AeroSHARK, its drag-reducing surface film, for the Airbus A330. The company said it began the final phase of supplemental type certification for the A330-200 and -300 at the end of August, and that an A330-300 belonging to Discover Airlines (4Y) will be the first Airbus aircraft anywhere to be equipped. The jet is flying test sorties over several weeks either side of the modification at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, which converts Airbus airliners into freighters.
The certificate is being sought from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Lufthansa Technik says the process covers technical documentation, ground and flight tests, and final in-service validation during flight operations. The release gives no target date.
AeroSHARK is an adhesive film covered in riblets about 50 micrometers high, modeled on the grooved skin of a shark and aligned with the airflow. Applied to the fuselage and engine cowlings, it reduces frictional drag, and Lufthansa Technik puts the saving at about 1% on every flight. The company, which developed the film with Surventis, the surface-coatings business formerly known as BASF Coatings, describes it as the only riblet technology on the market approved for commercial aviation.
The Lufthansa Group says its 22 equipped aircraft together save around 19 metric tonnes of kerosene and about 60 metric tonnes of CO2 a day. Divided across the fleet, that is roughly 0.9 tonnes of fuel per aircraft per day. On a SWISS (LX) Boeing 777-300ER, the group puts the coverage at 950 square meters (10,200 sq ft) of film and the saving at about 1.1%.
In May 2021, Lufthansa Group and BASF said the film would be rolled out on Lufthansa Cargo's entire freighter fleet from the beginning of 2022, then ten aircraft, for annual savings of around 3,700 tons of kerosene. Five Lufthansa Cargo (LH) Boeing 777Fs carried it as of July 2026, according to the group's breakdown of its 22 equipped aircraft. The freighter fleet had grown by 2024: Airways reported in August of that year that Lufthansa Cargo was operating 12 Boeing 777Fs of its own, alongside six flown by the AeroLogic joint venture. None of the releases reviewed here explains the pace.
The rest of the 22 is made up of SWISS's 12 Boeing 777-300ERs, which the group describes as its entire fleet of the type, four of Austrian Airlines' (OS) six Boeing 777-200ERs, and one Lufthansa Boeing 747-400.
Austrian's four equipped aircraft show how the arithmetic works on an old airframe. When Airways reported the Boeing 777-200ER application in August 2024, Chief Operating Officer Francesco Sciortino said the carrier was spending the money "even though our Boeing 777-200ERs are in their final years of service." A 1% saving accumulates over flight hours, so the size and remaining life of the target fleet decide whether the film is worth applying.
Grazia Vittadini, chief technology officer of the Lufthansa Group, put the reasoning in the release itself, saying the planned A330 certification would tap "the potential of another significant portion of the global long-haul fleets." Lufthansa Technik calls the A330 the world's second-most-delivered long-haul aircraft model.
Discover Airlines is the launch operator inside the group. The Lufthansa Group's leisure carrier flies from Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC) and operates 33 aircraft, according to the September release. In October 2025, with a fleet of 30, it said it would retire three Airbus A330-200s during 2026 while taking five A330-300s, leaving a long-haul fleet of 16 aircraft, all A330-300s, by the end of this year.
The certification being sought covers the A330-200 as well as the -300, and Discover is retiring its A330-200s during 2026. The release does not say when the approval is expected. The Airbus A350-900, four of which the airline plans from mid-2027, is not a certified AeroSHARK type.
Outside the group, Lufthansa Technik has supplied the film to EVA Air (BR), which began equipping nine Boeing 777 freighters in 2024. Airways has also reported an application on LATAM Airlines Brasil Boeing 777-300ERs.
The release turns to Mastercard in its second paragraph, saying AeroSHARK "is supported by Mastercard in the current project phase" as part of a strategic partnership between the payments company and the Lufthansa Group on sustainability. Vittadini's quotation refers to an "innovation alliance between Lufthansa Technik, Discover Airlines, and Mastercard."
Several paragraphs further down, under a section on extending the film to more aircraft types, Lufthansa Technik writes that the path to certification "requires technical expertise, operational resources, and robust financing." The release does not connect that sentence to Mastercard, and it puts no figure on the support, does not describe its form, and does not say whether it carries commercial terms.
The release gives no date for certification of the A330-200 and -300 and does not say how many aircraft will be equipped.
A second development track is already running. Lufthansa Technik and Surventis are testing about 70 film samples, each 20 by 20 centimeters (8 by 8 in), on a Lufthansa City Airlines (VL) Airbus A319 registered D-ABGK, flying between Munich and Hamburg through February 2027.
The samples sit on the sides of the fuselage and on the inside and outside of the engine cowlings, and the aim is a material tough enough for wings and stabilizers, surfaces that carry higher aerodynamic loads than the areas AeroSHARK covers today.
Lufthansa Technik says extending the film to those surfaces could double the saving.
