Colombian Flag Carrier Avianca to Relocate to JFK Terminal 6

DALLAS — Avianca (AV), Colombia's national carrier and the second-largest airline in South America, has announced plans to relocate its New York JFK (JFK) operations to the new Terminal 6 (T6) in 2026. The airline becomes the first South American carrier to join T6's impressive roster, which already includes Air Canada (AC), Aer Lingus (EI), Cathay Pacific (CX), JetBlue (B6), Lufthansa (LH), and SWISS (LX). Avianca's operations will continue at Terminal 4 until the transition occurs in 2026, ensuring uninterrupted service for passengers.

The century-old airline offers up to 10 direct flights daily from JFK to more than six destinations across Central and South America using its modern Airbus A320 fleet. In 2024 alone, AV transported nearly 38 million passengers across its entire network, cementing its position as a major player in Latin American aviation. This move to T6 will enhance connectivity for passengers traveling between New York and Latin America, providing streamlined access to almost every country in the region.

JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), the developer that the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey selected for the T6 project, welcomed Avianca as the 14th international carrier to choose the new terminal for future operations. "We are thrilled to welcome Avianca as our first South American T6 carrier," said Steve Thody, CEO of JFK Millennium Partners. "Avianca shares T6's commitment to accessibility and delivering a first-rate travel experience."

Terminal 6: A New Standard for Air Travel

Terminal 6 represents a key component of JFK Airport's comprehensive $19 billion transformation initiative. The terminal is being constructed in two phases, with the first six gates scheduled to open in 2026 and completion expected by 2028. This ambitious project aims to establish JFK as a world-class gateway with two new terminals, two expanded and modernized terminals, a new ground transportation center, and a simplified roadway network.

Passengers using the new terminal will experience a digital-first, boutique environment designed for efficiency and comfort. The terminal boasts an average walk time of less than 5 minutes from the TSA security checkpoint to all gates, ensuring quick and convenient access. Additionally, T6 will feature extensive biometric-enabled self-service bag drop facilities, streamlining the check-in process for travelers.

The terminal will showcase 100,000 square feet of NYC-inspired shopping and dining options, multiple airline lounges, and curated public art featuring local and international artists. Environmental sustainability is also a priority, with the terminal incorporating sustainable building materials, rooftop solar power, and energy-efficient systems throughout the facility.

A Successful Partnership

JFK Terminal 6 is being developed through an award-winning public-private partnership between the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and JFK Millennium Partners. Vantage Group, a global airport project developer, leads the consortium. It includes American Triple I (a certified minority-owned infrastructure investor), RXR (a New York real estate developer), and JetBlue.

When completed, Terminal 6 will connect seamlessly with Terminal 5, creating an anchor terminal on the north side of JFK. The project demonstrates New York's commitment to maintaining JFK's status as a premier international gateway while enhancing the passenger experience through innovative design and technology.
