DALLAS — A diplomatic row between China and Japan has led to the unprecedented cancellation of scheduled flights between the two countries.
China's airlines have allegedly cancelled all services on their various routes to Japan. These cancellations have come about due to increased tensions between the two countries.
Last year, Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, suggested that Japan would be prepared to intervene in any potential conflict over Taiwan, which China claims as one of its provinces. The statement angered China, which has called on its nationals to avoid travel to Japan.
On Monday, January 26, China's Foreign Ministry also issued a safety warning for its nationals against travelling to Japan.
Rising Tensions
China's call to boycott Japan has led its key airlines to cancel flights from China to Japan on most routes.
Flight data platform Flight Master revealed that all scheduled flights on 49 China-Japan air routes have been cancelled for February 2026.
Furthermore, some of China’s largest carriers have announced they will extend the cancellation and rescheduling period for Japan-related flights until October this year. This includes Air China (CA), China Eastern Airlines (MU), and China Southern Airlines (CZ).
Seeking Alternatives
That said, Chinese tourists appear not to be staying home for the approaching Lunar New Year holidays. While Japan no longer features on most Chinese nationals' go-to list, other countries are not off limits.
Flight data shows that air traffic between China and destinations in Korea and Vietnam is brisk during the upcoming holidays. Airlines operating flights from China to these destinations have not been affected by the embargo.
