Taiwanese Carrier China Airlines Commits to Boeing 777X Fleet

DALLAS — China Airlines (CI) has joined Boeing's 777X customer family with a significant fleet investment. The Taiwanese flag carrier placed firm orders for 10 777-9 passenger aircraft and four 777-8 Freighter aircraft. This landmark deal, booked in March but previously unidentified, makes CI the first airline in Taiwan to order the next-generation wide-body.

The agreement includes options for five more 777-9 aircraft and four 777-8 Freighters. The new aircraft will likely serve long-haul routes to North America and Europe, both key markets for the carrier."

Enhanced Economics

The 777-9, currently slated to be the world's largest twin-engine commercial jet, offers significant environmental improvements. It is designed to deliver 20% lower fuel consumption and emissions than previous-generation aircraft. With a range of 7,295 nautical miles, it can connect Taiwan with destinations as far as the U.S. East Coast, representing an essential part of the carrier's route network strategy.

China Airlines plans to configure the aircraft with 426 seats in a typical two-class layout. "The 777X will enable us to deliver an enhanced travel experience and greater reliability for our customers," added Chen Han-Ming, China Airlines' president.
