MADRID — On Wednesday, Air Europa (UX) became the first airline in Spain to receive a Boeing 737-8. With a distinct emphasis on efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience, the Boeing 737 MAX signals the start of a comprehensive fleet renewal for short- and medium-haul operations.
The largest aircraft lessor in the world, AerCap, is leasing several aircraft to UX, including the Boeing 737-8. Five Boeing 787-9 units will arrive this year, and nine more Boeing 737-8 units in 2026, to operate 20 Boeing aircraft by mid-2027.
These aircraft will make serving continental routes and, eventually, short-haul domestic connections possible. The choice supports UX's plan to run an all-Boeing fleet, something the airline has already done.
The airline repeatedly rescheduled its initial announcement that it would start operations in September 2025. We now know that the first Boeing 737 MAX UX flight between Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Madrid-Barajas (MAD) will be on June 23, 2025. A significant investment for the airline, the Boeing 737-8 is intended to enhance and update its current fleet of aircraft.
Air Europa's larger plan to update its planes and transition to new, more efficient types includes this eagerly anticipated leap into a new era of aviation technology. The Boeing 737-8, with its increased range and fuel efficiency, is expected to boost long-term competitiveness on European routes.
