RIGA — Latvian airline airBaltic (BT) begins naming Airbus A220-300 aircraft after cities in the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania after a public contest conducted in August 2024.
The first three aircraft wearing the colors of the Baltic countries’ flags carry the names of the three Baltic capital cities:
- YL-ABN in Latvian flag colors is named after the Latvian capital, Riga
- YL-CSJ in Estonia flag colors is named after the Estonian capital, Tallinn
- YL-CSK in Lithuanian flag colors is named after the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius
The airline plans to gradually rename the remaining 45 aircraft after the most beloved cities determined again by public voting.

Aircraft Naming Contest
A naming contest was held in August 2024 in honour of the 35th anniversary of the Baltic Way. Between August 5 and August 22, over a million people voted for their favourite cities in Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania, resulting in a shortlist of 48 cities, 16 from each Baltic country.
Initiative highlights unity and cultural heritage in the Baltic States and strengthens recognition of the Baltic region around the world, making it an attractive destination for international and local travellers.
“We are grateful to everyone who participated in this contest and showed support for their favourite cities. By naming airBaltic aircraft after Baltic cities, we not only inspire travellers to explore these places but also promote their international recognition. We are proud to be a part of the region's growth and strengthen its connectivity with the rest of the world," said Elīna Prāve, VP Marketing at airBaltic.
