DALLAS – Pilots at Lufthansa (LH) have begun a two-day strike. The action, organized by the Vereinigung Cockpit union, focuses on pay disputes, the company pension plan, and remuneration at the regional subsidiary CityLine.
According to a report by Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the work stoppage is causing major disruptions to flights across the airline and several subsidiaries at a time when the conflict in the Middle East is already causing difficulties for the industry.
According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur - dpa, the walkout by pilots at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, and Lufthansa CityLine began shortly after midnight on Monday. All Eurowings departures from German airports will be affected on Monday.
Hundreds of flights are set to be canceled Monday and Tuesday, with Lufthansa's hubs in Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC) hardest hit.
This is the fourth set of strikes at the airline group this year. Last week, a one-day cabin crew walkout forced hundreds of cancellations at Germany's largest airline.
Lufthansa criticized the union's strike notice, saying it represented a new level of escalation. Flights to selected Middle Eastern destinations have been excluded from the strike action.
