SAS Resumes Copenhagen–Seattle After 15-Year Hiatus

SEATTLE – SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK) has officially resumed its nonstop service between Copenhagen and Seattle, marking the airline’s return to the route for the first time since 2009.

SAS had previously served Seattle and the Pacific Northwest for decades, starting in the 1960s. Starting a new route to Copenhagen with five flights a week “brings back many memories” for locals in the region who remember their first European trips on SK aircraft.

Yesterday’s inaugural flight strengthens SK’s presence on the U.S. West Coast, joining its existing San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX) services.

This milestone follows closely on the heels of SK’s entry into the SkyTeam alliance, ending its 27-year membership with Star Alliance.

SAS will now operate five round-trip weekly flights between Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The current flight schedule is:

  • Flight SK937: Departed Copenhagen at 1:05 PM, arrives in Seattle at 2:00 PM.
  • Flight SK938: Departs Seattle at 4:20 PM, arrives in Copenhagen at 11:00 AM the next day.

SAS’s Airbus A350-900 will initially serve the route. The aircraft features 300 seats across three classes: 40 in business class with a 1-2-1 layout, 32 in SK Plus (premium economy), and 228 in economy (SK GO).

Comments from SAS, Seattle Officials

A few days back, SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff celebrated the return of this route, noting the strategic importance of the Pacific Northwest: “The return to Seattle opens new possibilities for travelers and businesses alike, reinforcing the deep historical and cultural ties between Scandinavia and this dynamic U.S. region.”

Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins and SEA Airport Interim Managing Director Arif Ghouse attended yesterday’s celebration.

“We’re very excited to welcome SAS back to SEA and offer a new route to kick off a summer of travel to everyone in our region,” said Commissioner Calkins. “Not only do we have a historical relationship with the airline, but our rich Scandinavian cultural connections run deep, and this is an exciting nonstop connection to Denmark’s beautiful capital city, which shares so much in common with the Greater Seattle region.”

“Seattle is more than just a new destination for us. It is a return to a city with historic ties to Scandinavia and growing importance for business and tourism,” said SAS Group CEO Anko van der Werff.

“We are proud to reopen this connection and offer our customers even greater reach across the Atlantic.”

With Seattle now added, SK operates direct flights to 11 destinations in North America, further cementing Copenhagen Airport’s role as a key hub for travel to and from Northern Europe.
