STARLUX Airlines Launches First Phoenix–Asia Route to Taipei

PHOENIX — Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) will make air history as STARLUX Airlines (JX) prepares to introduce the city’s first nonstop flight to Asia, connecting with New Taipei City’s Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, aka Taipei-Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).

Pending final regulatory approvals, the new route, which is expected to open three to four times weekly in early next year, is a significant milestone for Phoenix and Arizona.

Mayor Kate Gallego broke the news during her State of the City Address, stressing the revolutionary effect of foreign investments, most significantly the record-breaking US$165 billion investment planned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in Phoenix. She stressed how such investments have reinforced the city's economic foundation and made it one of the emerging global hubs.

“Phoenix’s first non-stop flight to Asia reflects the incredible strides we’ve made with our local economy, and our emergence as an international city,” said Gallego. TSMC’s historic investment in Phoenix has brought thousands of high-wage jobs and boosted our reputation as a semiconductor hub, and now it’s helping increase air service demand.

Luxed-out Connectivity

The entry of JX into the Phoenix market is not just about increased connectivity. Established in 2018 by K.W. Chang, the erstwhile chairman of EVA Air (BR), JX was based on developing a premium, five-star carrier. Having taken its first flight in 2020, JX has earned a reputation for redefining luxury in the air with top-of-the-line service and cutting-edge aircraft. "I knew the minute I stepped into Phoenix that STARLUX needs to make the investment to operate here," said Chang.

"Not only is growth between Taipei and Phoenix phenomenal, it's a great fit for our level of service. We are honored and proud to be the first carrier to offer nonstop Asia service to the Phoenix community."

The route will initially be operated by the airline's Airbus A350-900, a next-generation jet with 306 seats in a three-class configuration known for efficiency and comfort.

The economic impact of foreign service is also considerable. According to PHX's latest impact study, international routes generate more than US$3 billion annually for the local economy, and the new nonstop service will be worth more than US$100 million annually.

Aviation Director Chad Makovsky welcomed the news as a massive victory for the city: "This huge victory for Phoenix and our region is a reflection of the vision and commitment of Mayor Gallego and our City Council as they show support for the ongoing growth and modernization of our airport to be an international-class gateway."

Ticket sales will begin after final government approval. The new route will surely create thrilling opportunities for business and holiday travelers and further enhance Arizona's connection with Asia.
