Avelo Airlines to End Its West Coast Operations

BURBANK — Ultra-low-cost Carrier (LCC) Avelo Airlines (XP) has announced the closure of its Southern California base, flying out its California-based aircraft fleet and staff to different hubs across the country.

The Houston, Texas-headquartered budget airline has operated out of its Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) base since 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and under scrutiny by industry experts. However, the ULCC faced financial hurdles to keep its West Coast operations profitable, although CEO Andrew Levy stated that no single reason existed for the end of operations.

Furthermore, according to ktla.com, on Monday, Levy said the airline would reduce its “number of planes flying out of Los Angeles County to one by mid-August, before shutting the base down entirely on December 2, 2025.” This closure will coincide with Avelo ceasing all West Coast operations.

Avelo recently expanded its operations by establishing its eighth base at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) in coastal North Carolina. Alongside this development, the airline has introduced seven brand-new nonstop routes and added a new airport to its growing network.

To add to this, XP announced the launch of operations from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) with nonstop flights to Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN). Service on this route began in May 2025.
