SEATTLE — Boeing has requested a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to continue selling an additional 35 units of its 777F aircraft, as its new model, the 777-8F, will not enter the market until after the regulations take effect in 2028.
The emissions regulations were finalized in 2024 and apply to newly produced large aircraft but exempt existing ones. According to Boeing, the exemption would fill the gap until the 777-8F enters service and help airlines meet increased air cargo demand. The company intends to get approval by May 1.
Trade, Cargo Importance
The economic significance was pointed out by Boeing as follows: “Very large freighters make up over USD 260 billion of the USD 600 billion of goods that are exported via aircraft in 2024. Each 777F aircraft that is shipped out of the USA contributes about USD 440 million to the USA balance of trade.”
Without the exemption, export potential exceeding US$15 billion will be at risk.
The Boeing777F is the only large wide-body freighter that is still in production.
