HONG KONG — Cathay Pacific (CX) announced plans to launch nonstop flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan, from its Hong Kong hub, reinforcing itself as Asia’s super connector and offering a wide reach of destinations for travelers.
The airline expects to launch direct service in the first quarter of 2027, three times a week. The route will be operated by its Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
The new service comes in an effort to bring further business opportunities to Hong Kong. Given the emerging and rising markets in Central Asia, the new route looks to capture some of that business demand.
“Central Asia is a strategically important Belt and Road region that offers ample business opportunities,” said Cathay Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau. “As Hong Kong’s home hub carrier, Cathay has aligned interests with the HKSAR Government in strengthening our connectivity with this emerging market.
Hong Kong’s role as Asia’s superhub
The new service also looks to continue Hong Kong’s push towards an international connecting superhub for travelers. Together with its low-cost subsidiary HK Express, the two carriers now operate nearly 600 return flights a week to 33 Belt and Road destinations.
“Last year, we launched direct flights to Urumqi in Northwestern China, a city whose close proximity to Central Asia extended our reach not only in the Chinese Mainland, but also to other key destinations along the Belt and Road. As we celebrate '80 Years Together' with our home city, we are excited to build on that momentum by announcing plans to operate direct flights between Hong Kong and Almaty, our first-ever destination in Central Asia, fostering new opportunities for people, cargo, and capital flow with this dynamic region.”
