LUTON, UK — easyJet (U2) plans to introduce SpaceX's Starlink internet on its Airbus A320, A320neo and A321neo aircraft, with installations beginning in the first half of 2027. The airline announced the agreement on October 26 and expects the rollout to finish by early 2028.
Monday's announcement does not specify whether passengers will pay for access. It also gives no route-by-route rollout schedule, leaving availability on individual flights unresolved.
The decision follows earlier reservations from CEO Kenton Jarvis. In January, he said the economics of providing onboard Wi-Fi were challenging, according to Reuters' reporting on the agreement. Reuters said easyJet did not disclose the deal's terms, leaving the financial basis for the change unclear.
Wizz Air announced its own fleetwide Starlink plan on June 8, with installations also due to begin in 2027.
For easyJet, the proposed service would let passengers stream entertainment, browse and play online games on their own devices. Jarvis said the airline wants to appeal to both leisure and business travelers by offering more of the services they want onboard.
Starlink uses satellites in low Earth orbit, closer to the planet than traditional geostationary systems. SpaceX says the shorter distance reduces the delay as data travels between users and satellites. That delay, known as latency, affects how quickly an internet connection responds.
easyJet also sees potential for passengers to order from its inflight menu through connected devices. It described that as a possibility, without announcing a launch date for digital ordering.
The airline's release gives no estimate of how long each aircraft would be out of service for installation.
