EVA Air Orders Four Boeing 787-9s, Extends 777-300ER Leases

TAIPEI — Taiwan’s EVA Air (BR) has approved the purchase of four new Boeing 787-9 passenger aircraft, with the airline budgeting up to NT$60.88 billion (US $1.94 billion) for the acquisition, according to local media reports citing company filings.

The carrier will also extend the lease of four Boeing 777-300ERs and upgrade six additional 777-300ERs for up to NT$4.77 billion, as part of a broader interior modernization program aimed at improving cabins across all classes — including seats, inflight entertainment, and overall passenger environment.

Including this round, EVA says it is upgrading 20 aircraft in total. The airline currently operates 89 aircraft across passenger and cargo fleets.

This latest move fits into EVA’s existing long-term fleet plan, which includes delivery of:

  • 5 Boeing 787-9s and 4 Boeing 787-10s by 2033
  • 24 Airbus A350-1000s from 2027
  • 18 Airbus A321neos from 2029

What This Means for the Market

EVA’s dual-fleet renewal strategy — balancing Airbus and Boeing widebodies — strengthens its long-haul competitiveness while improving passenger product consistency across a rapidly modernizing fleet.
