IndiGo to Launch Operations at Navi Mumbai Airport

NAVI MUMBAI — IndiGo (6E) becomes the launch operator out of the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), as it launches the first commercial flight out of the brand-new airport. VANM aims to become one of the key gateways of domestic and international traffic for the western part of India.

Along with the Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) joint venture, 6E will commence operations with 18 flights a day to over 15 Indian cities from the start of operations, with plans to increase operations to 79 flights a day, including 14 international flights, by November 2025.

The airline is also planning to expand its operations further to over 100 flights a day by March 2026, and then to 140 flights a day with 30 international flights by November 2026.

Navi Mumbai International Airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport is an international airport being constructed in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, Raigad district, Maharashtra, India. When completed, it will become the second airport of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, serving alongside Mumbai's existing Bombai Airport (BOM).

Spread over 2,866 acres in Navi Mumbai, the airport will initially cater to 2 crore passengers and 8 lakh metric tonnes of cargo, increasing to 9 crore passengers and 32 lakh metric tonnes of cargo at full capacity. The lotus flower has inspired the airport's design, incorporating green elements such as green energy and sustainable development.

Though the official opening date hasn't been announced yet, Adani Group director Gautam Adani indicated a June 2025 opening. The project is a strategic move to make NMI a key domestic and international transfer point.

Pieter Elbers, IndiGo CEO, said, "IndiGo will be the inaugural carrier to depart from NMI and we couldn't be more pleased… This expansion reaffirms our commitment to serving the growing needs of our aspirational travelers.

The news comes as the airlines appoints Vikram Singh Mehta as Chairman, succeeding Venkataramani Sumantran who stepped down from the post after the completion of his five-year term as a board member.
