DUSHANBE —Boeing and Somon Air (SZ) have reached a historic commitment for up to 14 new planes, including 787-9 Dreamliners and 737-8 jets, the largest single fleet investment in Tajikistan's aviation history.
The agreement, signed at the C5+1 Summit in Washington, is part of the carrier's plans to expand its intercontinental reach and modernize its single-aisle operations.
Expanding Horizons with the Dreamliner
The wide-body 787-9 will enable the carrier to offer new intercontinental connections from Dushanbe(DYU) for the first time, opening up direct long-haul services from Tajikistan. The Dreamliner offers up to 25 percent improved fuel efficiency over older airplanes, with passenger comfort greatly enhanced and per-seat operating costs significantly lower.
Building a Next-Generation Narrowbody Fleet
The 737-8 will form the backbone of DYU's regional and medium-haul network. With its reputation for reliability and flexibility in flight range, the jet will replace the airline's current Next-Generation 737s, helping reduce maintenance costs while supporting fleet commonality.
A Strategic Step in Regional Growth
"This commitment marks a new era for our national carrier," said Abdulkosim Valiev, CEO of Somon Air. Boeing Vice President Paul Righi also added that this order reflects confidence in Boeing's technology and its ability to help DYU scale efficiently.
Once finalized, the order will support more than 11,000 U.S. jobs and further strengthen the partnership between Boeing and Central Asia's growing aviation market.
