FRANKFURT – Frankfurt Airport’s (FRA) Terminal 2 officially halted all passenger operations on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, launching a major modernization project designed to overhaul the aging facility.
Airport operator Fraport initiated the planned closure to allow for a comprehensive renovation of the building and its technical systems. Opened in 1994, the terminal has faced over 30 years of intensive use. Previous upgrades were limited to minor projects that could be completed without interrupting daily flight schedules.
The extensive, building-wide overhaul is now possible due to the recent opening of the airport's new Terminal 3. The added capacity from Terminal 3 allows Fraport to reroute passenger traffic seamlessly, creating a window to upgrade the older infrastructure efficiently.
Fraport officials stated that the temporary closure is a necessary step to significantly upgrade the airport’s long-term infrastructure and improve the overall passenger experience. A specific timeline for the reopening of Terminal 2 has not yet been announced.
All airlines previously operating out of Terminal 2 have completed a multi-wave transition to the newly inaugurated Terminal 3. Despite the closure of passenger areas, critical support infrastructure—including aircraft apron positions, the automated baggage conveyor system, the underground parking garage, and the driverless Sky Line people mover—will remain fully operational to ensure uninterrupted connections between the remaining terminals.
The €1.5 billion (US$1.73 billion) modernization program will comprehensively overhaul the building's essential security, technical, and operational systems. Crews will completely replace the core building automation, energy grids, and HVAC, fire alarm, and smoke removal systems, while simultaneously upgrading vertical transportation—such as elevators and escalators—as well as sanitary facilities and administrative offices. Beyond basic infrastructure, airport operator Fraport AG will use the shutdown to restructure the terminal’s layout to better meet the demands of a major international aviation hub. This strategic redesign aims to optimize passenger flows, introduce flexible retail spaces tailored to changing traffic patterns, and centralize security checkpoints to maximize efficiency.
“The terminal’s temporary closure will let us systematically upgrade our airport’s infrastructure while improving its performance and making it more sustainable and comfortable at the same time,” says Dr. Pierre Dominique Prümm, Fraport AG’s Chief Technical Officer. “After Terminal 2 has been modernized, it will be a central component of our future hub system – with state-of-the-art processes, greater flexibility and a significantly improved travel experience for our passengers.”
Initial preparations for the Frankfurt Airport overhaul are underway, focusing primarily on site layout and logistics. Planners have allocated approximately 3 years to draft and finalize detailed structural engineering blueprints before any physical expansion begins. Major construction crews are scheduled to break ground in 2030. Under the projected timeline, a completely transformed Terminal 2 will resume operations by the mid-2030s, boasting an annual capacity of over 10 million travelers to facilitate long-term growth for Star Alliance member carriers and other international airlines.
