Thailand to Give Away Free Domestic Flight Tickets

DALLAS — Due to declining tourist numbers, Thailand has launched a campaign aimed at attracting international tourists to the country. The Kingdom of Thailand, once labeled the world’s most popular tourist destination, has seen a decline in tourist numbers in recent times.

In 2019, almost 40 million foreign tourists visited Thailand, contributing significant sums to the economy. The country hoped to welcome 39 million tourist arrivals in 2025. However, only 20.8 million international arrivals have been recorded thus far this year. Therefore, the government has revised its 39 million goal to 33 million tourists for this year.

To help attract tourists, Euronews reports that Thailand intends to offer free domestic flights for 200,000 international visitors over the next three months. The country expects the campaign to generate around THB 8.8 billion (US$245 million) in revenue. It is also hoped that the promotion will improve the geographical spread of tourists to regions beyond the popular Bangkok (BKK), Phuket (HKT), and Chiang Mai (CNX) areas.

Free Domestic Ticket Offer

The ‘Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights’ would provide eligible foreign tourists with a free domestic return flight when booking international flights directly through airlines or travel agencies.

Thailand intends to give away 200,000 free domestic flights to international visitors over the next three months. These domestic tickets will be available when flying with six Thai carriers, including: Thai Airways (TG), Thai AirAsia (FD), Bangkok Airways (PG), Nok Air (DD), Thai Lion Air (SL), and Thai Vietjet (VZ).

The initiative, backed by Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism, is set to operate from September to November, if the Thai cabinet gives it the green light. The Thai government is expected to subsidize these flights by up to THB 1,750 ($54) for one-way tickets and THB 3,500 ($108) for return trips. The tickets will also include checked baggage of up to 20 kilograms.

However, the free tickets are subject to some conditions. Only international visitors arriving by air are eligible. Furthermore, flight tickets bought before the programme launches will not be eligible for free tickets.
